We went back to Ethiopia a few months ago (late spring) it was full of promise and hope. Like many things in Ethiopia it always moves slower than the western mind can conceive. Let me explain; we started this project with the hope of educating the children of Bula Buta village and that continues. We have had the good fortune of having two priests working closely with the project who have taken it a step further.
The children will not be sharing their mud classroom with the goats any longer. They have a new building with cinderblock walls and a tin roof, windows and a door that closes out the animals and the elements. We are now sending one of the older girls from the village to teacher training school. Using a local teacher versus bring one from Addis helps in multiple ways: This will help the young students see that local village people can get good jobs, and it also help the local economy by further educating a local person and giving that person a job with an income, knowing she will live and stay in the village, not move back to the big city.
If you go to the picture above and click on it you can see pictures of the new school and some of the kids. We are sorry that there is not more personal communication but we hope to improve that next year.
We will be back in Ethiopia in November of this year and hope to have moved things a little further.
